The Samburu people are semi-nomadic pastoralists, closely related to the Maasai, and have lived in northern Kenya for centuries. They migrated from the Nile Valley, settling in the arid regions of Samburu County, where they developed a unique culture adapted to the harsh environment. The Samburu are known for their resilience, relying on cattle, goats, and camels for survival. Their society is organized around age-sets, with distinct roles for warriors (morans), elders, and women. The Samburu National Reserve was established in 1962, gaining fame as the home of Elsa the Lioness from the book and film Born Free. Today, the Samburu continue to preserve their traditions while coexisting with wildlife in this ecologically rich region.
