Historically, it was part of the Maasai grazing lands, but urbanization has transformed it into a bustling residential and commercial hub. The area is part of the Athi-Kapiti ecosystem, a critical wildlife corridor connecting Nairobi National Park to other conservation areas. Kitengela is also famous for the Kitengela Hot Glass studio, a creative hub for glassblowing and art. Despite modernization, the Maasai community continues to preserve its cultural heritage, coexisting with wildlife in the surrounding plains.
