Elsamere is the former home of Joy and George Adamson, renowned for Elsa the Lioness whose story was told by Joy in her international bestseller "Born Free" and in the film of the same name. George and Joy Adamson made conservation and education their life's work. They were arguably the ones who brought conservation to the public's attention and made people aware of the problems Joy's riches increased as her reputation as a conservationist rose, although neither she nor George had any particular interest in money. The Elsa Wild Animal Appeal, which Joy founded as a new charity and which later changed its name to The Elsa Conservation Trust, received royalties from books and movies. George and Joy both gave their whole estates, including Elsamere, Joy's home on Lake Naivasha, to the Elsa Conservation Trust following their murders, which occurred ten years apart. The trust has contributed millions of dollars over the last 40 years to both major and small wild animal education and conservation projects, helping to establish the renowned Kenyan parks and reserves at Meru, Samburu, Shaba, Kora, and Hells Gate. The trust is also in charge of funding Elsamere's Centre for Education in Sustainability's activities. Now, its primary objectives are to advance conservation and conservation education globally, especially in East Africa.
